Onam is a harvest festival celebrated by the people of Kerala. Onam Festival falls during the Malayalam month of Chingam (Aug - Sep).The celebration of Onam festival start from Atham day till Thiruvonam day and is of 10 days duration. Onam is a celebration of equality, justice, prosperity and fairness. This festival is a remembrance of the return of a mythical, powerful ruler (king) – Mahabali. This imaginary annual visit of Mahabali from the nether world to meet his subjects is celebrated as Onam festival.
Some other cultural activities likeVallam Kali, Pulikkali, Pookkalam, Onatthappan, ThumbiThullal, Onavillu, Kazhchakkula, Onapottan, Atthachamayam etc. are performed as part of celebrations all over Kerala at this time. Thiruvathirakali is a women's dance performed in a circle around a lamp.The ''Vallamkali(the snake boat race) is another event that is synonymous with Onam.

The floral carpet, known as ‘Onapookkalam’, is made out of the gathered blossoms with several varieties of flowers.All over Kerala, Pookalam competitions are a common sight on Onam day.The Onamsadya (feast) is another very indispensable part of Thiruvonam. The feast is served on plantain leaves and have more than 13 to 15 curries, along with traditional pickles, papadam and a dessert called 'payasam' (a sweet dish made of milk, sugar, jaggery and other traditional Indian savories).Onam festival gives keralites the message to live with joy, unity, and truthfulness.
