Attukal is a Hindu pilgrimage centre in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala.The Attukal Bhagavathy Temple is popularly described as Sabarimala of the Women, where only women are allowed to participate in the Pongala ritual.The Pongala Mahotsavam is the most important festival of Attukal Bhagavathy Temple. This festival at Aatukal has been entered into the Guinness book of world records as the largest congregation of women in the world.More than 2.5 million women devotees assemble from different parts of Kerala and outside.It is a ten-day programme commencing on the Karthika star of the Malayalam month of Makaram-Kumbham (February–March). It ends with the sacrificial offering known as Kuruthitharpanam at night.
Goddess Attukalamma is believed to be incarnation of 'Kannaki', the heroine of 'Silappathikaram' written by Tamil poet Illango in 2nd century A.D. Attukal is the place where Kannaki took rest on her northward journey from Madurai to Kodungallur. Ponkala is made up of porridge of rice, sweet brown molasses, coconut gratings, nuts and raisins.
