Arthunkal Perunnal

Arthunkal is a small village  in Cherthala taluk, about  8 kilometer west of Cherthala and 22 kilometer north of the Alappuzha town, in Alappuzha district of Kerala, India. It is one of the sacred churches in Kerala, lots of Christians and non-Christians came here on feast day. The feast is held in January every year.
 Owning to the unmanageable gathering of pilgrims and the resultant perplexity on January 20 the last day of the feast, the church authorities have organized an alternate minor feast the eighth day after the principal feast (Octave). This is known as 'Ettam perunnal'. Generally this feast likewise has much importance to the extent that as the principal feast. A procession, carrying the elegant statue of St. Sebastian, from the church to the shore and back, is the most essential occasion of the blowout. Interestingly, an eagle  is seen meandering the skies, consistently throughout the time of the procession. This eagle excessively has gotten to be a piece of the grandma stories, about the vicinity of St. Sebastian as a guardian saint for the village. The highlights of the closing day of the festival include an exceptional custom aficionado's creep on their knees the distance from the adjacent sunny shore to the congregation, known as Urulunercha  make offerings - little metal reproductions of bows and arrows. Following these rituals there is a ceremonial procession to the beach. Procession of decorated elephants carrying 'Neercha 'is primary fascination for visitors.

On January 18, as the doors of the church are opened at early hours of sunrise, many fans, including Hindu pilgrims coming back from the Sabarimala temple, came here to pay their tribute to the saint. The Hindu explorers likewise take bath at a facility attached to the church or at the sea. This custom follow its attaches to a legendary story that connections the Arthunkal Veluthachan with the Sabarimala Ayyappan.
