Kumarakom Boat Race

Kumarakom boat race or is one of the most popular boat race in kerala, and it is entirely different race compared to Nehru Trophy Race. While other boat race is either ceremonial or competitive events.The kumarakom boat race is conducted in the remembrance of Sree Narayana Guru, social reformer’s visit to this village.

History reveal’s that Sree Narayana Guru, visited kumarakom in 1903, in a boat from Alapuzha  accompanied by a parade of boats. Sree Narayana Guru established a temple named as Sree Kumara Mangalam Temple in Kumarakom.

The boat race is held  on Sree Narayana Guru Jayanthi Day, which usually comes in August / September . A grand parade of boats carrying the portrait of Sree Narayana Guru, from the Kumaramangalam Temple to Kottathodu, is held on this day.  

The parade is accompanied by various music and dance performances such as the Garudan, the Panchavadyam and the Nadaswaram. The various art forms like Thiruvathirakkali, Kolkkali, Theyyam are also conducted on that day.

Hundreds of boats like the Chundan, the Iruttukuthy, the Churulan and the Veppu take part in the boat race. The Iruttukuthy boat race is the most popular one who wins the race, will get awarded the Sree Narayana Ever-Rolling Trophy.
