Champakulam Moolam Boat Race

Champakulam Boat Race, Kerala is one of the oldest, traditional and annual snake boat race of Kerala. Champakulam Boat Race is conducted on the moolamnakshtram or star in the month of mithunam on the holy river pamba. It directly associated with the Sree Krishna Temple at Ambalappuzha. The race is about 450 plus years old.
Chundans (Snake Boats) were the Navy boats of Chempakasserry rulers. But now they are using only for the boat races. The villagers worship the boat like a deity.Champakkulamchundan has 130 ft length, breadth of 69 inches and a depth of 22 inches with the rear portion towering to a height of about 11 ft with a long tapering front portion. Champakkulamchundancan cover a distance of 1.4 km in about 5 minutes. In the centre of the chundanvallom, two people will stand and they beat the odithatta (fire platforms) with poles and sing the vanchippattu (songs of the boatmen) to have a rhythm.
Boats of various categories like the chundan (snake boat), veppu, iruttukuthi, churulan and others would be a part of the final race in each category. Even thoughamong the category of boat races, the snake boat raceis the main attraction for the cheering thousands.There are a number of resorts where people can stay and enjoy the beauty of nature and the boat race.
