Mural paintings depicting the story of Mahabharata can be seen on the walls of the temple. This temple is known as the first temple built by Parasurama. MahaShivaratri is the main festival and  Aanayoottu(feeding of elephants), is the second biggest festival held in this temple. The Vadakkunnatha temple ground, Tekkinkadu Ground is the main venue where the famous festival Thrissurpooram is conducted, even though the Vadakkunnatha temple is not a participant of this festival. The Koothambalam may be 1,300 years old and it is believed that the construction of the temple was done during the seventh century by Perumthachan from Parayipettapanthirukulam.
