Pathanamthitta is known as the headquarters of pilgrimage tourism. It is one of the most important pilgrim centers in Kerala and there are many Temples and Churches. More than fifty per cent of the total area of this district is covered by forests. The district is surrounded by Kottayam, Idukki, Alappuzha and Kollam districts. It has a border with the state of TamiLNadu in the east.
The famous pilgrimage centre of Sabarimalais there in Pathanamthitta. The district receives an estimated 3 to 4 million pilgrims during the festival season of Sabarimala. And also it is the place where the Asia's biggest and the world's second largest Christian convention,Maramon convention is conducted. Aranmula is a major attraction among tourists for its famous metal mirrors and snake boat race. Pathanamthitta district is known for its fairs and festivals. The Padayani is one such major folk art.
Pathanamthitta has a moderate climate and has a reserve forest and it covers approximately 50% of the total district areaPathanamthitta district has a unique position in the inland fisheries map of Kerala state with its freshwater resources like rivers, reservoirs, streams, ponds, quarries and paddyfields. Pathanamthitta is a less industrialized district of Kerala.
