Malappuram district is a district in the state of Kerala, and was formed on 16 June 1969. Malappuram district has its headquarters at the city of Malappuram. In earlier times, Malappuram was the head quarters of European and British troops and later it became the head quarters of the Malabar Special Police (M.S.P).  
Prior to 1947, the area covered by the present district formed part of Kozhikode, Ernad, Valluvanad and Ponnani taluks of the erstwhile Madras Presidency. On 1st January 1957, Tirur taluk was newly formed taking portions of Ernad and Ponnani taluks. Later Ernad and Tirur continued under Kozhikode district and Perinthalmanna as well as Ponnani under the Palakkad district. The new district of Malappuram was formed with four taluks, Ernad, Perinthalmanna, Tirur and Ponnani.
Malappuram (literally, a land a tops hills) is situated 50 kms south-east of Kozhikode, bounded by the Nilgiri Hills in the east, the Arabian sea in the west and Thrissur and Palakkad districts in the south. Arabian Sea is on the west of the district. Kadalundi Puzha, a major river in Kerala is flowing around the Malappuram city.
The word Malappuram means "terraced place atop the hills". Malappuram, literally a land atop hills, has contributed much to the cultural heritage of Kerala. A famous centre for Hindu-Vedic learning and Islamic philosophy, the temples and mosques of this region are well known for their spectacular festivals.  Pookkottur near Malappuram, has a place in history, where the mappila warrior fought the British.  It was the military headquarters of the Zamorins of Kozhikode since ancient times.
Malappuram is the first and only municipal body in the country to win an ISO 9001-2008 certification for quality management.
There are many tourist attractions in this district. Padinharekara beach, close to Ponnani and at the end point of the Tipu Sulthan road, Kadalundi Bird Sanctuary, Ponnani, a tidal port at the mouth of Bharathapuzha, Kodikuthimala, a scenic hilltop near Perinthalmanna are some of them.
