Kannur , also known as Cannanore, is a city in Kannur district in the Indian state of Kerala.  The old name Cannanore is the anglicised form of the Malayalam name Kannur. Kannur district is bounded by Kasaragod District to the north, Kozhikode district to the south and Wayanad District to the south-east. With the Western Ghats in the east and lakshadweep sea in the west, kannur district is bounded by a wealth of natural beauty. The Arabian Sea lies to the west.  
Kannur was initially a portmanteau determined from two Malayalam words: Kannan (Krishna), a Hindu god, and "Ur" (spot)—making it "the spot of Lord Krishna. The deity of the Katalayi Sreekrishna temple was earlier situated in a shrine at Katalayi Kotta in the south eastern part of the Kannur town.
Kannur is known as the Land of Looms and Lore, because of the loom industries functioning in the district and ritualistic folk arts held in temples. Production of quality and exportable mixtures of handloom fabric was begun when the Basal Evengelical Mission entered the field. The handloom business, which was at one time the syndication of private endeavor, has since been organised on co-operative lines.
 Kannur is the home of Kerala folklore institute. It is also famous for its native performing art ,Theyyam.  Small shrines known as kavus associated with the Theyyam dot the district.An extensive number of folk plays and dances are predominant among the planned caster and tribes. Every tribe has its own particular glorious collection of folk plays and dances which are performed throughout celebrations.
There are huge number of tourist spots at Kannur that draws in lots of travelers. Some of the places of interest are thumbnail Muzhappilangad Beach, Pythal Mala/Vaithal Mala, Aralam Wildlife Sanctuary, Thalassery Fort,  Kannur Fort, Parassinkkadavu Snake Park, Valiyaparamba Island.
