Sabarimala Sree Dharma Sastha Temple, dedicated to Lord Ayyappa, is a Hindupilgrimage center, situated on a hilltop (about 3000 feet above sea level) named Sabarimala in Pathanamthitta district. Sabarimala is not open throughout the year. It is open for worship only during the days of Mandalapooja, Makaravilakku and ChitraVishu. The journey to the temple is to be taken through difficult paths in the forest as the vehicles can go only up to Pampa. From Pamba, all the pilgrims begin trekking the steep mountain path of Neeli Mala till Sabari Mala. The elderly pilgrims are lifted by men on bamboo chairs till the top, on being paid. Women between the ages of 10 and 50 are not allowed to enter the temple but it’s possible for men of all ages. The devotees are expected to follow a Vratham (41-day penance) prior to the pilgrimage.
The prasadam at Sabarimala temple is Aravanapayasam and Appam. These are prepared by using rice, ghee, sugar, jaggery etc. As per belief, this route was used by Lord Ayyappa to go to the forest and kill the demonessMahishi. Erumeli is located about 56 km southeast of Kottayam town. Here, devotees offer prayers at the temple of Lord Dharmasastha and the nearby mosque in the name of VavarSwamy, who was a Muslim and a trusted warrior companion of Lord Ayyappa. One of the important rituals at Erumeli is PettaThullal, in which devotees paint their faces with colours and dance with wooden sticks. At the shrine located here, pilgrims break coconuts and burn camphor as offerings, before proceeding with the trek.
One of the sacred spots on the way to the temple of Lord Ayyappa, the River Pamba is considered to have the power to purify one from curses and evil.Sannidhanam is about six kilometers from Pamba.Upon reaching AppachiMedu, the trek follows more or less an even ground up to SabariPeetam.Upon reaching AppachiMedu, the trek follows more or less an even ground up to SabariPeetam. From Saramkuthi, after a 15-minute walk one reaches the Pathinettampadi or the holy 18 steps. The number of pilgrims reaching Sabarimala is only increasing day by day.
