Margam Kali

Margam Kali is an ancient and the most popular artistic performance among the Syrian Christians of Kerala. A group of 12 members sing and dance clapping around a Nilavilakku wearing the traditional white dhoti and blouse. The lamp represents Christ and the performers his disciples. The dancers sing themselves while performing the dance. Margamkali differs from other dance forms in such a way that there is no musical accompaniment for this dance form.
"Margam" means path or way or solution in Malayalam, but in the religious context it indicates a way to attain salvation. In the early days only men performed Margam Kali. Nowadays women also perform this dance form. Margamkali is often presented as a stage item today. It is also included as a competition item at the school and college level.
